Verla Brooks

Verla Mae Brooks, age 86, of Somerset, passed from this life on Monday, March 14, 2016, at the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center.

Verla was born in Harlan County, daughter of the late Matthew and Dorothy Greene Fuson, on August 1, 1929. She married John Estil Brooks, on June 10, 1946, in Ingram.

There were seven children from their union. Verla enjoyed flower gardening, cooking and canning. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She attended Saline Baptist Church. She is survived by her sons, James E. (and Treva) Brooks, of Barbourville, John L. (and Phillis) Brooks, of Pineville, Tony (and Charolette) Brooks, of Eubank, Timothy A. (and Robin) Brooks, of the Oak Hill Community, and Bro. Teddy K. (and Regina) Brooks, of Somerset; her daughter, Saundra Mays (and Ron), of Somerset; her twenty grandchildren; and thirty-two great-grandchildren.

Verla is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her son, Gary R. Brooks; her brothers, Bill Henry Fuson and Edward Lee Fuson; her daughter-in-law, Mary George Brooks; and her two grandsons, James E. Brooks, Jr. and Benny Allen Mays, Jr..

Visitation will be Friday, March 18, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., in Southern Oaks Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, after the visitation, at 1:00 p.m., in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Teddy Brooks and Bro. Noah Broughton officiating.

Interment will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

Verla's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
