Saundra Simpson

January 31, 1947 — June 3, 2011

Saundra Louise Simpson, age 64 of Somerset, KY entered into her heavenly home on June 3, 2011 passing away at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. Mrs. Simpson was born on January 31, 1947, the daughter of Delmer L. and Lucille Sayers Vanhoosier.

Her spouse, Michael W. Simpson, survives. They were married on June 10, 1967 at Calvary Baptist Church by Reverend Howard Mounce. She was a loving wife and mother. To this union was born one son, Jonathan Michael (and Rhonda) Simpson of Glasgow, Kentucky and one daughter, Joy Vanessa Simpson of Somerset.

Also surviving is her best friend and sister, Janet Lee (and Ron) Stricklin; two grandsons, Ryan Alexander Simpson and Jarrett Cooper Simpson of Glasgow, KY; a granddaughter, Kayla Brooke Goldsmith of Cecilia, Kentucky; three nieces, Vickie Loze, Tinnew (and Rick) Douglas and Kimberly Simpson; father-in-law, Homer Simpson, Sr., brothers-in-law, Homer Ray Simpson, Jr., Roger Simpson and James Barton Simpson; an uncle, Ray Sayers; aunts, Lorene Crawford and Montie Vanhoosier; seven cousins who were like siblings.

Her grandchildren were the highlight of her life. Many of her students called her "granny" outside of the classroom.

Preceding her in death were her parents, grandparents, Irvil and Vera Ollie Sayers, Elijah and Bonnie Vanhoosier, mother-in-law, Lona Katherine Simpson and nephew, James Barton Simpson, Jr.

She was raised in a loving home where family life was important and friends were a treasure. A member of Beacon Hill Baptist Church, she accepted Christ at an early age and practiced her beliefs in everyday life. She had a compassion for children and was always there to help in some way, never asking for recognition.

After receiving an associate degree in accounting, she worked in the banking business until becoming an at-home mom, doing cub scouts, brownie scouts, boy and girl scouts, PTA and children's choir. She co-owned a business with her husband, working as the bookkeeper. Wanting to become a teacher, she entered Eastern Kentucky University completing Education and Masters degrees. She was a business/technology teacher at Southwestern High School, sponsor for FBLA and FPLP and a district officer of KEA. This was her passion and she loved her students and fellow teachers.

Louise will be missed by her circle of high school friends who met for dinner on a regular basis, the associate members of KEA and the couples who shared happy times with her and Michael.

Visitation for Mrs. Simpson will be Monday, June 6, 2011 after 4:00 pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Highway 80, Somerset, KY 42503.
