Roland Kenneth (R.K.) Padgett passed away November 26, 2016 at Thomson Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore, KY at the age of 96. He was born October 1, 1920 in Chattanooga, TN to the late Walter and Bess M. Padgett. He moved to Somerset as a child and became a member of First Baptist Church where he is still a member. He married Geraldine (Jerry) McCracken Padgett on February 4, 1946. They were married for 58 years.
R.K. was a sports enthusiast his entire life. He played and lettered in football, basketball and baseball for Somerset High School. He was instrumental in organizing Somerset little league baseball. He coached, officiated and umpired both youth and high school sports for many years. He officiated high school football when some of the surrounding counties were just starting their football programs. He also coached his granddaughters' softball teams as well as his grandson in baseball. R.K. was playing golf and bowling up into his nineties.
He was proud of his service in the Philippines during WWII and his many years in the Kentucky National Guards which he retired from. He also retired from Kentucky State Government.
R.K. was a loving Dad and Granddaddy to daughters Donna (Ron) Pfaff and Jan (Russell) Ping; grandchildren Kevin (Devann) Steele, Shannon (Jeff) Hopper and Kelly Steele; great-grandsons, Jay, Braedon, Deen, Sam and Lincoln. Also surviving are his sister Inda Padgett Kidd and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Padgett.
Because of R.K.'s love and concern for children, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Project 58:10, First Baptist Church, PO Box 276, Somerset, KY 42502.
Visitation for R.K. Padgett will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2016 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company and Crematory. A celebration honoring the life of R.K. will follow the visitation at 1:00 pm. Interment will be at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
Members of KY National Guard will serve as pallbearers.
