Paul Edward Coomer

December 3, 1947 — May 28, 2024

Paul Edward Coomer, Age 76 of Somerset, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 28th at
the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center. Paul was born December 3, 1947, the son of Leslie Paul
and Laura Ann Rowe Coomer of Adair County. Paul married his wife, Lillian Kay Knight on
January 21, 1967. They were blessed with their only child, Paula Michelle on January 15, 1971.
Paul was a member of the West Somerset Baptist Church for over 50 years. He loved the Lord
and served as a Sunday School teacher for 47 years.
Following his time as a mechanic at McAlpin Chrysler, he went to work for the Kentucky
Transportation Department where he retired after 32 Years of service.
Paul was best known for his work for the county. He served in the Somerset Pulaski County
Rescue Squad for 50 years as Chief. He was instrumental in the formation of the Kentucky
Association of Rescue Squads. He became a certified dive master, traveling across the state to
assist other squads. During his time as Chief the Rescue Squad saw unprecedented growth
with the newest station named the Paul E. Coomer building.
Paul also served on the Pulaski County Fire Commission, served as a search and rescue
coordinator for Pulaski County, and served as a deputy sheriff for the Pulaski County Sheriff's
department.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James Leslie and J.C. Coomer. Seven
Sisters, Lena Bryant, Lula Purvis, Irene Warner, Lou Annie Estes, Jean Grant, Victoria Coomer,
Haddie Marie Montfort. He is survived by his wife Lillian, daughter Paula Michelle (Gary) Phelps,
a granddaughter Madison Dawn (Noah) Wesley, a grandson Payton Conner Phelps, one brother
Russell (Beverly) Coomer of Louisville, two Sisters, Peggy (James) Freeman of Campbellsville,
and Mildred Coomer of Glasgow, along with a host of church family and friends.
Visitation for Paul Edward Coomer will be at West Somerset Baptist Church on Tuesday, June
4th from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and Wednesday, June 5th from 11:00 AM until the time of
service at 1:00 PM. Brother Larry Butte and Brother James Floyd will be officiating. Burial will
follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens. Pulaski Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of all
arrangements.
