Norfleet Godby

Norfleet "Leon" Godby, 86 of Somerset, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Somerwoods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born July 16, 1924 to the late Virgil and Artie Smith Godby in Somerset , Kentucky.

He retired from Pulaski Auto Parts after working in that field since 1946. He was listed in the 1946 edition of "Songwriters and Poets of America" and was published as a writer in trade magazines and religious publications. He was a member of Duke Memorial Baptist Church and was very active in church work. He was music director at Langdon Street Baptist Church for 40 years and taught Sunday School classes from junior high through adult. After joining Duke Memorial Baptist church he was Music Director and Senior Men Sunday School Teacher.

He was a charter member of the Somerset-Pulaski County Community Chorus and sang in a Barber Shop Quartet, called "The Southern Melodeers" as well as singing as a soloist in many churches throughout Pulaski Co.

Norfleet is survived by nieces Doris (Jack) Ridner, Marie (Jeff) Ridner and nephews Jimmy (Judith) Avera, David (Joyce)Avera, Don (Tammy) Avera , and Ricky Godby.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Arvel Godby and sister, Thelma Avera.

Visitation for Norfleet Godby will be Monday, January 24, 2011 at 5:00pm at the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Co. & Crematory.

A celebration honoring the life of Norfleet Godby will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Co. & Crematory with the Rev. David Morris officiating.

Interment will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
