Mary Ellen "Barney" LaFavers, age 90, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at the Jean Waddle Care Center. She was born in Louisville, KY on December 5, 1925 to the late Herman and Mary Elizabeth Myers Barnett. She was married to Carlus B. LaFavers who preceded her in death.
Surviving is one daughter, Janie Bond (Bill) of Oklahoma City, OK; a daughter-in-law Ronna Hargis LaFavers of Somerset; four granddaughters, Heather LaFavers, Holly LaFaver (Chris Perdue) and Hope LaFavers all of Somerset and Beth Hartai (Akos) of Plano, TX; five great grandchildren, Jordan LaFavers, Emily and Jacob Estep, Daniel and Balint Hartai.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Michael J. LaFavers and three sisters. Nancy Hamilton, Betty Moss and Jane Hutchinson.
She was a member of Somerset First United Methodist Church, the Glen Gover Sunday School Class, a true and dedicated servant for God and her Church, from visiting the sick and shut in's to driving a new minister of the church showing where various members lived. Mary Ellen truly cared for others. Not only volunteering for the church, she was a longtime volunteer for the Outreach Program for the American Cancer Society and was herself a breast cancer survivor for 42 years and a volunteer for Hospice of Lake Cumberland. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Kentucky Public Retirees Association.
In her professional career as a public health nurse, she immunized students throughout the Pulaski County area. She also opened the first home health agency here in Pulaski County which later expanded to the Lake Cumberland District which encompasses ten counties.
A visitation for Mary Ellen LaFavers will be held on Friday, February 26, 2016 from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church.
A celebration honoring the life of Mary Ellen LaFavers will be held Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Greg Ryan and Rev. Steve Spitzer officiating.
Interment will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
