Lucille Vanhook

Lucille Chitwood Vanhook, age 87, of Somerset, KY., passed away January 30, 2011 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.

Lucille was born in Elihu, KY. on March 28, 1923 to the late Sherman Edward and Maude Acres Chitwood. She was a faithful member of East Somerset Baptist Church and a longtime member of the East Somerset Homemakers Club. In her lifetime, she was a loving mother, devoted wife and friend. To her grandchildren, she leaves a legacy of faith, compassion and extraordinary love.

She is survived by her children: James (Diann) Vanhook, Susie (Dr. Don) McAlpin, Jenny (Michael) Ledford of Somerset and Patricia (Sam) Cox of Westerville, OH. Our "Gramster" has nine grandchildren: Matt Vanhook, Rebecca Stopher, Dr. Josh McAlpin, Zach McAlpin, Mandy Lucille (Brian) Young, Michael B. Ledford, Jr., J. David (Stacy) Ledford, Suzie Ledford, Tripp (Deirdre) Cox. Lucille is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Lane Stopher, Haley McAlpin, Christian Young, Bella McAlpin, Samantha Ledford and James David Ledford, Jr. Other surviving family members are two sister-in-laws: Pauline Chitwood and Ruth Chitwood, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Vanhook was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. James Herschel "Rip" Vanhook. They were married June 10, 1942 and he passed away October 4, 1982. Her brothers: Raymond, Vercie Gene, Harry, Sherman Edward "Junior" and Dean Chitwood; and her sisters: Bernice Shadoan and Mae Neeley Wood also preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00pm on Tuesday, February 1 and Wednesday, February 2 after 8:00am at East Somerset Baptist Church. The celebration of Lucille's life will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, February 2 also at East Somerset Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Darvie Fenison.

Memorial donations can be made to the Pulaski Alzheimer's Respite Center, PO Box 393, Somerset, KY 42502; The Herschel Vanhook Memorial Library at East Somerset Baptist Church, 345 Pump House Rd., Somerset, KY 42503 or Hospice of Lake Cumberland, 100 Parkway Dr., Somerset, KY 42503.

Burial will be at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
