As the day began, Juanita Carter McGahan, age 95, passed away July 20, 2015. Juanita was a loving wife of 58 years to Delano Dewell McGahan who died in 1997. Mother of three children, Joyce (Harvey) McKinney of Somerset, Bobby D. (Margaret) McGahan of Somerset, and Myrna (Byron Wayne) Wesley of Lexington, KY.
She was MaMaw and Grandma to five grandchildren and seven great grand children including: Timothy Wade (Sabrina) McGahan parents of Darrell (Jaclyn) of Somerset, and Trevor of Nancy, KY, and Christie (the daughter of Tim) (LeeRay) Richey of Shopville, KY; Troy (Terra) McGahan and son Zechariah of Appomattox, Virginia; Kevin (Amy) McKinney and their sons Austin and Kellen of Somerset; Jason (Kandie) McKinney and their son Brady of Somerset; and Kelly Wesley (Darren) Taylor of and their twin sons Wesley and Carter of Lexington, KY. Her many nieces and nephews were important in her life.
Born in Carter Ridge, KY in 1920 to her parents Mangus C. and Ida Randolph Carter. She was the second of four children- one older sister Geneva Carter (Nelson) Wesley, and two younger brothers Elden Ray (Luta) Carter and Charles (Mildred) Carter. Parents and siblings preceded her in death. The Sunday afternoons gatherings under the shade trees of her yard were always memorable.
Mrs. McGahan was a Pulaski County resident in the Rolling Green Acres development in the community of Ringgold Road. She was a member of the Rolling Hills Baptist Mission, Nancy, KY, where her grandson Troy was the pastor at one time. She knew the words to every hymn and always enjoyed the fellowship, preaching and pot lucks.
Juanita was kind hearted and began being a "caregiver" at age 16 for her grandmother. She cared for Aunt Nancy Kelly who lived with them until her death at 105. Juanita cared for both her Mother, Father, and her husband for his last twenty years of life. She would quote the Ten Commandments and say her long life was due to the way she honored her parents.
Ms. Juanita made friends easily and was a witty companion. Her vegetable and flower gardens were a source of great pride and joy. She believed in weekly church attendance, raising the kids right, common sense living and butter on everything. Her beautiful handmade quilts were gifts to each grandchild on the occasion of their marriage and are examples of her creativity and fine workmanship.
Mrs. McGahan lived in her home until a fall resulted in a broken hip. Since the injury she has lived at Somerwoods Center. Her daily caregivers brought immense comfort and enjoyment to her each day. She cherished these ladies who included Alice Thomas, Sheila Thurman, Nadine Denham, and Becky Whitaker. The staff at Somerwoods were kind and caring and called her "Ms. Juanita".
Juanita made a difference in this world and will always be with us in spirit.
