James Paine

January 31, 1939 — July 16, 2016

James A. Paine (Jim), age 77, of Nancy, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at his residence. Jim was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on January 31, 1939, to the late Addie C. and Raymond E. Paine.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Dee Keeney, whom he married June 13, 1964, in Portsmouth, Virginia; his brother, Charles R. Paine and wife, Barbara, from Edenton, North Carolina; a sister, Deborah Shelton, of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; and extended family.

Jim graduated from Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1957. He earned a B.S. degree from VA Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he lettered in football (as a guard) and track (as a shot putter); and a Master's degree in sociology from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He did additional graduate studies at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA) and William & Mary College (Williamsburg, VA). He continued to participate in recreational sports, both handball and racquetball, after college. He won the gold medal for the shot put in the Virginia Senior Olympics in 1994. He served in the Virginia National Guard and was in the reserves for six years before being honorably discharged in 1968.

Jim retired from the Portsmouth Public School System in 1991, where he had been a teacher, coach, and administrator for 29 years. He and his wife retired to Nancy, Kentucky, in 1995.
Jim was a real "people person". He always had a quick smile; he enjoyed his friends and felt blessed with his life. He loved his God, his wife, his family, and his many friends.

He was fond of playing his Taylor (T-5) guitar, riding his 4-wheeler through the woods, and being on his tractor.
