Hugh Hurst

Hugh T. Hurst, 98, of Somerset, KY., passed away Monday, November 29, 2010 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. He was born April 2, 1912 in St. Clair County, AL to the late Thomas Barto and Ludie Mae Tillman Hurst. He married Emmer Fugate Davidson who passed on November 19, 1980 and then married Barbara Claunch Beshears on March 24, 1984.

Hugh was a graduate of St. Clair High School, and of Berea College in 1939 with a Bachelors Degree. He began work as an UK College of Agriculture Extension Agent in Whitesburg, KY from 1940-1944. He came to Pulaski County in 1944 where he served as Extension Agent until his retirement in 1977. After retirement he worked as an Agriculture Specialist for First and Farmers Bank from 1977-1991. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow Award through Rotary International, had 40 years of perfect attendance, and was past President of Somerset Rotary Club. Hugh was the oldest member of the Somerset First United Methodist Church.

Hugh is survived by his wife, sons: David Hugh Hurst of Somerset, KY, Harrell Emerson (Carol Jo BSN) Hurst PhD of Fisherville, KY, Barry Lynn (Carol Galat JD) Hurst BSE, MBA of Lexington, KY and St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands, and Paul Gordon (Patty Mayer MD) Hurst MD of Greeley, CO; step-sons: Kenneth (Teena) Beshears and Jerry (Debra) Beshears of Somerset, KY.; step-daughters: Regina Beshears Brinson and Amy Beshears (Jeff) Stewart of Stamping Ground, KY; grandchildren: Hadley Jane Hurst, Tyler Emerson Hurst, Hilary Mayer Hurst and Heidi Mayer Hurst; step-grandchildren: Bart Beshears, Tony (Heather) Beshears, Joshua Beshears, Jacob Beshears, Adam Stewart, Amanda Beshears (Luke) Durham, Emilee Beshears (Darin) Haste and Carly Morgan Brinson. He is also survived by his sister Emma Ozella (Edgar A.) Gilbert of Berea, KY.

Preceding him in death were his parents, first wife, and infant son, Noel Davidson Hurst; brothers: Clyde James Hurst, Coy Franklin Hurst, Herschel Huston Hurst and Roy Charleston Hurst; and sister, Willie Mae Park.

Visitation for Hugh will be held Friday, December 3 from 5:00 - 9:00pm at the chapel of Somerset Undertaking and Crematory.

A celebration honoring the life of Hugh will be held Saturday, December 4 at 11:00am at the chapel of Somerset Undertaking and Crematory with Rev. Terry Reffett officiating.

Interment will be in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens. Somerset Undertaking and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
