Helen Edwards

Helen Ruth Edwards, age 97, of Somerset, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2020, at the Somerset Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility.

Helen was born on April 29, 1923, in Somerset, daughter of the late Fred and Margie Hamm Murphy.  She earned her teacher’s certificate from Sue Bennett College and taught in a one room school house in Sloans Valley.  Helen married Bishop Edwards and there were three children born to their union.  Widowed at 66, she became fiercely independent.  She was always one to put family first.  One of her greatest joys was cooking and many of you have sampled that "chocolate pie".  She was also an excellent seamstress and loved quilting.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Somerset.

She is survived by her children, Karen Marshall (Bill), of Somerset, Rhonda Edwards, of Frankfort, and Douglas Edwards (Connie), of Lexington; her grandchildren, Miranda Marshall, Kelli Magness (Glen), Jessica Edwards and Delaney Edwards; four great-grandchildren, Addison and Jillian Langford, Chloe Fee and Hazel Magness; two step-great-grandchildren, Andrew Magness and Ayanna Magness; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Helen in death are her parents; her husband, Bishop; her brothers, Fred Paul Murphy, Charles Robert Murphy and Sherman Neil Murphy; and her sister, Alice Murphy Brown.

A private graveside service in Lakeside Memorial Gardens will be held on Friday, July 17, 2020, at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Larry Cranfill officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of choice in memory of Helen Ruth Edwards.
