Helen Bradley

January 8, 1920 — February 18, 2024

Helen Cain Bradley, 104, wife of the late Harvey D. Bradley, died peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at her residence in Lexington, KY. She was born January 8, 1920, in Faubush, Pulaski County, KY, the daughter of the late Welby Cain and Nannie Burkett. Helen was active in NARFE for many years, and was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Lexington. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, and will be missed by all who knew her.

She earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Eastern Kentucky University, and taught elementary school for more than thirty years, starting in one-room and two-room schools in Pulaski County, and retiring from James Lane Allen Elementary in Lexington in the 1970s. She married her high school sweetheart, Harvey D. Bradley, on December 7, 1943 in Dodge City, KS, where he was a pilot instructor for the B-26 Marauder bomber. They were married for 56 years.

Helen loved, and was proficient at, many arts and crafts, which decorated and enriched her home and classrooms. She painted, sewed and quilted, and especially enjoyed working with the quilter's group at Good Shepherd, where their quilts were donated to good causes.

At age 88, Helen decided she wanted to learn to play the banjo, like her father had, so she bought a banjo and took lessons for several years.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Donald Starsinic; an infant daughter, Marietta; brothers, Oscar and Joe Cain, and sisters, Sophia Flynn and Flossie Roberts. Helen is survived by her grandson, Michael D. Starsinic of Bowie, MD; nephew, Dane (Pat) Mitchell of Cincinnati, OH; nieces, Marlene Roberts of Monticello, IL and Cella Flynn of Nancy, KY, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
