George Weaver

June 14, 1921 — April 20, 2016

George Logan Weaver, age 94, of Burnside, passed from this life on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at his residence.

George was born on June 14, 1921, in the Plato Community, son of the late Otis and Bethada Dethrage Weaver. He was a World War II veteran, serving his country in Europe, in the U.S. Army. He was on Omaha Beach on June 7, 1944. George married Gladys Mercer, on October 9, 1949, in Somerset. He retired from the General Motors Company, of Dayton, Ohio. George was an "avid" Cincinnati Reds fan and loved watching U.K. basketball. In his retirement, he was very dedicated to his church, Tateville Baptist Church, where he was known as the "Candy Man". George was involved in the construction of the Fellowship Hall of Tateville Baptist Church. For the last thirty years, George could be found walking the indoor course of Somerset Mall. He loved gardening, yardwork, fishing and boating.

He is survived by his daughter, Marie (and Bob) DeLong, of Springboro, Ohio; his three grandchildren, Brian Blevins, Amanda DeLong and Tyler (and Kryssi) DeLong; and numerous nieces and nephews.

George is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys, whom he was the devoted caregiver until her passing on December 30, 2015; his son, Gary Lee Weaver, who passed away January 23, 1993; his brothers, Ernest Weaver and Isaac Weaver; and his sister, Edith Stevens.

Visitation will be on Sunday, April 24, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., in Southern Oaks Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 25, 2016, at 12:00 noon, in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Troy Merrick officiating.

Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to the Tateville Baptist Church Fund.
