Donald Baldwin

September 23, 1938 — January 16, 2021

Donald E. Baldwin, 82, of Somerset, KY passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021 at his residence.  He was born September 23, 1938 in Speck Ridge, Elkhorn, KY to Winfrey and Lindal Baldwin.

He was a graduate of Dupont Manual High School in Louisville where he met his wife of 60 years, Nancy Miller Baldwin.  After graduation, Don was accepted into a tool and die apprenticeship program with General Electric in Louisville, thanks to a referral from his Uncle John Gatton.  Shortly thereafter, He and Nancy moved to Somerset where he became co-founder and co-owner of Briar Bowl Lanes along with his father, Winfrey “Wimp” Baldwin and sister, Judy Fothergill.

After retiring from the bowling alley, Don enjoyed flying and being a commercial pilot for Modern Vending company and the Ray family.  When not flying, he enjoyed spending time at the airport drinking coffee with good friends.

Don had a passion for “hot rods” and mechanical things. He worked tirelessly on restoring and tinkering with his many projects over the years.  He enjoyed music, reading and spending time with his family – always sharing fun and heartwarming stories of his childhood and family history.  He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandson Riley Whitaker.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Winfrey and Lindal Baldwin

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Miller Baldwin; a sister, Judy Fothergill; daughter, Tracy & (Don) Whitaker; a son, Greg & (Ginger) Baldwin; 3 grandchildren, Chris & ( Amber) Whitaker, Jessica Whitaker and Aaron & (Lindsey) Baldwin; 1 great-grandchild, Riley Whitaker; and other relatives and friends.

A Private Service is planned with interment in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
