David Lay Sr

David Donald Lay Sr., age 89 of Somerset, KY departed this life on Saturday, December 4, 2010 in Lancaster, OH.

He was born on October 18, 1921 in Pine Knot, KY to the late David and Minnie Cordell Lay. Mr. Lay was a self-employed air conditioning service repairman and a charter member of the Freedom Worship Center in Somerset, KY. He was an accomplished pilot, member of the Lions Club, a Kentucky Colonel and member of the American Legion Post #38. Mr. Lay was a United States Marine Corp veteran of World War II, serving in three major battles, including being the sole survivor at Iwo Jima at the raising of the American Flag. He was also a loving husband and father.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Kathryn Marcum Lay, whom he married on January 4, 1940 in Williamsburg, KY; a son, David Donald Lay Jr. of Broken Arrow, OK; two daughters, Connie (and Wayne) Bland of Dublin, GA and Judith (and Paul) Wilson of Lancaster, OH; thirteen grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Randall and Arnold Lay; two sisters, Leon Roe and Lena Tyler; and a daughter-in-law, Lynn Lay.

Visitation for Mr. Lay will be Wednesday, December 8th at 11:00 am at the Freedom Worship Center with his funeral to follow at 12 Noon with Pastor Ron Cathers officiating. Entombment will be in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens. Mr. Lay's grandsons and great grandsons will serve as his pallbearers. The American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard will conduct full military honors for Mr. Lay.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Freedom Worship Center.
