Charles Ping

Charles Ping, age 91, of Somerset, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 in Wilmore, KY.

Charles was born on May 24, 1925 in Meece, Ky to the late John and Julia Phelps Ping. Charles served his country proudly during World War II as a staff sergent in the infantry division of the United States Army. He was a wood buyer for Koppers Tie Company. Charles met his wife Jeanette and on September 19, 1946 they married. To that union of 56 years were born Julia Cox, Kenneth "Eddie" Ping, Kathy (and David) White, Darrell Ping and Loraine, Brenda (and Steve) Goff, and Charles "Chuck" Ping, Jr.; five grandsons, Michael Cox and Tammy, Kevin (and Amanda) Cox, David (and Shelly) White, Craig Goff, Jeff (and Nicole) Goff; eight great grandchildren Gary, Cody and Jordan Calhoun, Bryson, Korbyn, Konnor and Ty Goff, Reese Cox and a great great grandson, Ryker Calhoun. Charles married his second wife Madeline on August 9, 2003 and she survives along with three stepchildren Ed (and Karen) Ping, Sue (and John) Hargis, Carolyn (and James) Holt. Charles is also survived by a sister-in-law Rose Hahn and several nieces and nephews.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife; an infant son Eddie by his first wife; sisters, Virgie Tomlinson, Mary Lowery, Elva Ridner, Delphia Baker, Bernice Hughes, and brothers, Alfred Ping and Lloyd Ping.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be Friday, January 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Dennis McClanahan and Ronnie Tomlinson officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post # 38 Honor Guard.

Burial will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations go to the Thompson-Hood Veterans Center, 100 Veterans Drive, Wilmore, KY 40390-9775 Eisenhower Unit.

Southern Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
