Charles Phelps

June 24, 1937 — October 6, 2020

Charles Riley Phelps was born on 6-24-1937 to William Jennings Phelps and Rosa Mae Massner who have preceded
him in death. Charles passed from Life on 10-6-2020 at age 83. Charles was married to Bettie Jo
McClendon on March 5th1960 and was married for 57 years until Bettie passed away on September 21st
2017 from a month long illness. Charles has one son Charles Dewey Jennings Phelps of Somerset and
wife Tracie Lynne Mullinix Phelps and one Grandson Clayton Charles Jesse Phelps of Bowling Green and
wife Katherine Citak Phelps. Charles has 2 brothers William Carlos Phelps who died 10 days after birth
and Henry Jennings Phelps of Columbus Indiana wife Regina Phelps and Henry’s son Michael Scott
Phelps who preceded Charles in death. Michael Scott’s son, Tyler Scott Phelps of Indianapolis Indiana.
Henry’s son Henry Edward Phelps wife Susan Phelps and their son Eddie Phelps junior. Henry’s daughter
Kendra Phelps Phillabaum and son-in-law Kyle Phillabaum and their three children Emily Phillabaum,
Rebekah Phillabaum and Luke Phillabaum. Charles has 2 sisters Savanna Lee Daulton of Columbus
Indiana her deceased husband Lillard Tye Daulton and their children Lillard Dwayne Daulton and wife
Diane Daulton and Juanita Carl and her 3 daughters Mandy Kleffman husband Shane Kleffman, Shannon
Garrison husband Todd Garrison and Julie Schnur husband Dan Schnur.
Ethel Rosemary Tucker and husband Karma Lee Tucker of Somerset and their three children. Richard
Tucker, Andrea Stringer and husband Patrick Stringer, daughter Whitley Stringer. Cynthia Ray and
husband Michael Ray, son Jordan Ray and son Ryan Ray who preceded Charles in death.
Charles has a sister in law Barbara McClendon of Monticello Kentucky and deceased brother in law
Fredrick Dewey McClendon. Sons Tommy McClendon and Mark McClendon and wife Carisa McClendon
and Children Bethani Baker husband Jeff Baker Junior. Dakota McClendon and Jordan McClendon.
Charles worked for a time with his father as a carpenter and later worked at Jellico Grocery
Charles worked the majority of his time for Somerset Independent School system for 25 years mainly at
Memorial Elementary.
He enjoyed trading cars and traveling and camping with his wife Bettie in their Camper. He loved fishing
with his son and grandson and his claim to fame was that he once caught a shark off of a pier at Daytona
beach Florida with the help of his son.
Charles had been a member of East Somerset Baptist Church and later a member of Buena Vista Baptist
Church. He went to Shopville High School and then later went to Somerset High School and was a
member of the National Guard.
He was a son, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend and had a good spirit and joking nature and
was loved and will be missed.

A graveside service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Lakeside Memorial Gardens with Pastor Darvie Fenison officiating. Pulaski Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
