Betty Carter

Betty Jean (Williams) Carter died Thursday, June 9, 2022 at her home in Somerset.  She was 85 years of age.

Born in Somerset on October 2, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Alfurd and Etta Marie Spencer Williams.

Betty retired from the American Red Cross where she was employed as a member of the Disaster Relief Services. She was an active member of the First Christian Church where she sang in the church choir, served as a Trustee, and was a member of several church committees.  She was also instrumental in directing the construction of the new church sanctuary and building on Highway 39 in Somerset.

Known for her proficiency as a musician having played the coronet from a young age, she was the first woman appointed to the United States Marine Corp Band.

Ms. Carter is survived by her daughter, Tia Marie Murphy (and husband Kim) of Somerset, Kentucky and her son, William F. Carter (and wife Linda) of Avon, Indiana; two grandchildren and seven adorable, loving cats.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday June 12, 2022 at the Somerset Undertaking Company and Crematory. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Lakeside Memorial Gardens Chapel with Reverend Joe Altman officiating.  Full Military Honors will be presented by the American Legion Post #38 at the graveside.
