Bernard Carroll Shelton left this world to eternal life and be with his Lord and Savior on October 3, 2015 while surrounded by his family.
He was born on June 23, 1932 in Harlan, Kentucky to the late Matt and Virginia Vowell Shelton.
He was united in marriage to the late Patricia Mace Shelton. From this union came three children; the late Lillian "Libby" Shelton of Somerset, William "Bill" Shelton of Somerset and Clay Shelton (Amy) of Bowling Green; five blessed grandchildren, the late Kyle Shelton, Nick Shelton, Nathan Shelton, Noah Shelton and Natalie Shelton of Bowling Green; three great grandchildren, Evan, Macey and Kelly Shelton. He leaves behind a very special friend, Retta Tomlison.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Somerset, where he loved to worship God and serve the community. He started the Community Wide Dinners on Christmas and Easter in order to give everyone a chance to share a meal with others as many people were shut-in or alone on these special Christian holidays. He was one of the original board members of God's Food Pantry and has been instrumental since the very beginning in 1978 to keep it funded and its shelves stocked with food in order to provide food to those who for whatever reason could not afford to provide for themselves or their families.
He was preceded in death by four siblings, Charlotte Crawford, Kenneth, Joyce and Marilyn Shelton. He is survived by seven siblings, Jack Shelton (Sue) of Nancy, Janice Lovins of Indiana, Phyllis Presley (Kenneth) of Somerset, Pat Meece (Kermit) of Lexington, Henrietta Bascom (Don) of Alabama, Marcia Perkins (Luther) and John Shelton of Somerset and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Bernard Shelton will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Southern Oaks Funeral Home starting at 4:00pm for family and 5:00pm for the public and closing at 9:00pm and Wednesday, October 7, 2015 starting at 11:00am and closing at 9:00pm and Thursday, October 8, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Somerset beginning at 9:00am until 11:00am.
A celebration honoring Bernard will be held on Thursday, October 8th at 11:00am at the First United Methodist Church in Somerset. Bro. Steve Spitzer will be officiating.
Interment will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that Expressions of Sympathy be placed as donations to God's Food Pantry.
