Thomas Duncan

June 5, 1926 — July 22, 2021

It is with great sadness that the Duncan family announces that their beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother Thomas Emby “Tom” Duncan returned to his forever home on July 22, 2021.

Tom Duncan was born on June 5, 1926, in McCreary County, Kentucky, to the late Andrew Jackson Duncan and Sylvia Ann West Duncan. The cherished brother of Ralph (the late Jenny) Duncan and Eloise Duncan (Ed) Kidd, he was the adoring husband of the late Irene Vickery Duncan, whom he married in Covington, Kentucky, on July 16, 1948; the loving father of the late Deborah Sue Duncan Tompkins, the late Rebecca Adele Duncan Lavender, the late Karen Lee Duncan, Ann Thomas Duncan Cain, Stephanie Rose Duncan McDonald and her husband Mike, and Nana Beth Duncan Tripp and her husband John; the father of a special daughter-at-heart, Cindy Adair Sucharski (John); the proud grandfather of Michael Andrew Tompkins (Crystal), Margaret Irene Tompkins Dabney (Jackie), Ryan Matthew Tompkins (Tarin), Christian Thomas Foreman (Rebecca), Jeremiah Alexander Cain (Lisa), Richard Foreman, William Ross Lavender (Sharon), Emily Kate Lavender (Brent), Laura Christine Guy (Emmanuel), Morgan Elizabeth Talbot (Alex), Thomas Wilson Duncan (Jenny), Amanda Kristen Kargas (George), and Brandon Kyle (Mollie) Cross; the great-grandfather of A.J., Austen, Aaron, Aiden, Kylie, Abby, Jonathan, Jenna, Riley, Isabella, Lilly Rose, Lauren, Cannon, Matthew, Sarabeth, Cambri, Nicolette, Savannah, Cooper, and Penelope; and the companion of his faithful guard dog, Scooby.

Affectionately known as “Pap,” Tom was a longtime employee of Northfolk Southern Railway in Cincinnati, Ohio, retiring as a switchman before moving briefly to Flagler, Florida, and then to Bronston, Kentucky, where he resided at the time of his death. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy who served during World War II aboard the USS Mispillion, and was a courageous patriot and devout man of God who believed in the Pentecostal faith. An avid John Wayne fan, a prodigious teller of stories, a lover of music whose singing voice held out until the final days of his life, and above all a generous human being of the first order who adored his wife and his children, our Pap will be missed by all who were lucky to have shared in his monumental and extraordinary life.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 23, 2021 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 10:00am at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Grant Hardwick, Bro. Alex Talbot, and Bro. Dustin York officiating. Burial will be at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
