Floyd Halcomb

January 22, 1925 — June 3, 2020

Floyd Halcomb died peacefully in his sleep June 3, 2020, at age 95. He was proceeded in death by his wife of 68 years, Lucille Mason Halcomb, and a son, Mark Stephen Halcomb, his parents, John Sherman Halcomb and Mintie Catherine (Browning) Halcomb, his sisters, Daphna Halcomb, Viola Griffin, and Maude Jones, and his brothers Chester, Thurston, Willie, and Dennis Halcomb.

Floyd is survived by his son, Robin (Sarah) Halcomb, his daughter, Jill (Jeff) Smith, his granddaughter, Jennifer (Chris) LeBeau, his grandson, John (Kristy) Halcomb, and dearly loved great-granddaughters, Cosette LeBeau and Lorelai Halcomb. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, and friends, and his special dog, Bubba, and granddog, Sophie.

Floyd was born at Jepp Hill, Kentucky in 1925. In 1940, at age 15, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, and served in Pocatello, Idaho. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy and in war production at Jeff Boat Works in Jeffersonville, Indiana. After the war, he spent his career in road construction and quarry operations. He retired as a partner in Gaddie-Shamrock, Inc. Floyd and Lucille were members of Beacon Hill Baptist Church in Somerset, Kentucky.

Floyd’s passions were his family and his work. He was known for his wise counsel, and his knowledge and skill as a mechanic and problem solver. His family fondly recalls his favorite, often-repeated phrase, that he “had workadoo”, and that unexpected events often led to “dadjimit”. He will be remembered as one who had learned “…in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content”.

Due to Covid-19 concerns, a private graveside service will be held Monday, June 8, in Somerset, Kentucky. Pallbearers will be Robin Halcomb, Jennifer, Chris, and Cosette LeBeau, John and Lorelai Halcomb, and Jeff Smith, and honorary pallbearers Huey Holder, Denny Halcomb, Grant Halcomb, Zach Crawford, Stanley Stockton, and Bun Claborn.

The family expresses deep gratitude for Dad’s excellent care to Dr. Tonya Shea, Hospice of Lake Cumberland, Cumberland Nursing and Rehab, and Lifeline Home Health.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland, 100 Parkway Drive, Somerset, KY 42503.
